Grey's Anatomy

Oh what a difference a night makes.

Darn that Meredith Grey! I used to be a Grey’s Anatomy junkie. Like, I can’t leave the house on Thursday nights because I canNOT miss what’s about to go down. Meredith Grey and her explanation of life lessons at the end of the hour...OOOOh, Goodie! I am a crier. Undeniably, I am a leaker (i.e. Terminator 2…sad ending). So, something is going to happen during that hour that is going to tug on my heart strings and I’m going down. The “Heart in a Box” episode gave the closing speech:

“It’s a little horrifying just how quickly everything can fall to crap. Sometimes it takes a huge loss to remind you of what you care about the most. Sometimes you find yourself becoming stronger as a result, wiser, more equipped to deal with the next disaster that come along. Sometimes, but not always.”

Let me be your pep talk for 2012. Why Not? Ask yourself this question before you make that next step or leap into that “something’ that scares you to pieces. Why Not do “whatever” is going to have you standing at the top of the mountain wondering if you can ski down. Even if you tumble, you will get back up. Stop waiting for a better opportunity or timing. I am certain someone else is going to ask if you are sure this is what you want, or better yet, try to talk you out of it. Before you are turned away, consider the source. Next, GO TO THE source. A double-minded person is doubt-filled and confused. No more stable than a boat without a stern – The Titanic (catch the visual?).

Life happens and will continue to happen. The last thing any of us can do is ensure a particular outcome. WINNING (we luv you Charlie) is going for it when there are no guarantees. It’s Faith. It’s Confidence. You can’t get better at anything just watching someone else. As I was told so brashly at work, hope is not a plan. So why not do it…

Aye, and don’t hold my absence against me. I’m fighting too. :~)

George Bernard Shaw Quotes

You see things; and you say, 'Why?' But I dream things that never were; and I say, "Why not?"

-"Back to Methuselah" (1921), part 1, act 1

One man that has a mind and knows it, can always beat ten men who haven't and don't.

-"The Apple Cart" (1930), act I

The man who writes about himself and his own time is the only man who writes about all people and all time.

Loss

Loss cannot truly be written, only felt. Loss cannot be fully expressed, only experienced. For the memories we cannot erase, the images we constantsly relive, and the hope we will never relinquish...Pause.

21 Days

Ha! I will not be dissuaded from my goal today, you mean mean Internet and all of your posts! I say, myth or not, the answer is 21 days. Just go with it.

SOOOOO, it takes 21 days to form a habit, right? Of course it does. My question is where will you put your energy for the next 3 weeks? What change are you going to put into action so you can get to the next step you have been so desperately desiring?

Do you lay in the bed saying...
"Ooooh I need to start doing XYZ. But, I don't really have time. I'll get to it later."

Or stand in the mirror, further obsessing on your physical attributes...
"I need to get in the gym. I'm so sick of this/that. Let me go eat a piece of fruit. Oh dang, I need to go grocery shopping. I'll just run and pick up something from my regular spot."

This life and this body are good for a time. Treat it well and it will give you back whatever you ask of it. Might hurt, but those beautiful Marines believe pain is weakness leaving the body. Push yourself to the greatness you know you can achieve. One day at a time, but make it intentional. Put a plan forward and follow-through. Life is going to happen, but a having healthy habits can help you handle the sharp edges easier.

Small suggestion: Create an accountability plan.

  • Get a few accountability partners (3 is nice, respectable number).

  • Set a timeline to accomplish your goals. Anything over 6 months is too far out. Shorter time frames are more encouraging. One feels less overwhelmed by a task and more likely to stick with reaching the goal (and making more).

  • Have a way to measure the success of reaching said goal

  • Do not get upset with your accountability partners. It's the beauty of honesty and the beauty of friendship.

300

Did you see the movie 300? Setting the stage for the Battle of Thermopylae between the Greeks and the Persians, 300 tells the story of men who gave their last ounce of everything to defend what mattered to them most; their families, their futures, and their livelihood. The Spartans were an elite arrangement who allowed only those who’d proven strong, confident, and capable of not only defending themselves, but their brother as well, on the team.

Right before the King Leonidas left for battle, his wife said firmly “Soldier, come back with your shield or on it.’

I liked that part for several reasons, however, for our purposes today; remember that phrase as a motivator to be fearless in your endeavors. You have to fight for what you want, what you believe in, and what is right. As said many times before, you are not an island unto yourself. Others are counting on you and the light you are going to bring because of your sacrifice and perseverance. So when you go out, do NOT be afraid of the” what if’s”. Fight your fight. Run your race. Whether you come back walking upright or wounded, bent, and slow-moving – You are still MOVING. You’ll get it. *wink*

Don’t let someone else live your dream. Sure, there is enough to go around. I’m saying don’t let YOURS pass YOU by, because it will, if you don’t go after it.

"It is not the end of the physical body that should worry us. Rather, our concern must be to live while we're alive - to release our inner selves from the spiritual death that comes with living behind a facade designed to conform to external definitions of who and what we are." - Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, Physican

In the Midnight Hour

It’s always darkest before the dawn. There have been many troubling, painful, and destructive disasters to happen recently. It’s more than large-scale news of tornadoes demolishing memories and lives, flood waters rising and burying communities and millions of acres of farmland, and meltdowns at the chemical power plant. It’s the lives remaining (and lost) that we stopped hearing about after the initial event. It is the day to day struggle to rebuild and/or hang on to what one has left. It’s the person at the bedside of their loved one in the hospital, wanting different news. It’s trying so hard to have something and coming short -- of the promotion, a child, the marriage to last, more time.

In my house, we used to have a little sign as a reminder that all problems, whether you consider them big or small, are about perspective. With that, not to be dismissive of what you do not understand or have not experienced. Today is a moment of encouragement that all is not lost. When things are at their worst, the rainbow will eventually peak through. I am grateful for those hearts that have it to give of themselves to those who are in need and to continue to fight. You never know what end you could be on.

I think The Message bible interpretation is the coolest. While you are making your mark and charting your course, I have added what I’ve found to be celebration and constant encouragement, dancing in verses in Psalms. I’ve put both interpretations of the same verses (so it’s really not at long as it looks).

Psalms 20:4-5 May he give you the desire of your heartand make all your plans succeed.
5We will shout for joy when you are victorious and will lift up our banners in the name of our God. May the LORD grant all your requests. (NIV)

Psalms 20:4-5 Give you what your heart desires, Accomplish your plans. 5When you win, we plan to raise the roofand lead the parade with our banners. May all your wishes come true! (MSG)

Psalms 21:4-5 He asked you for life, and you gave it to him—length of days, for ever and ever.
5Through the victories you gave, his glory is great; you have bestowed on him splendor and majesty. (NIV)

Psalms 21:4-5 He wanted a good life; you gave it to him, and then made it a long life as a bonus.
5You lifted him high and bright as a cumulus cloud, then dressed him in rainbow colors. (MSG)

Psalms 23: 4-5 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5You prepare a table before mein the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. (NIV)

Psalms 23: 4-5 Even when the way goes through Death Valley, I'm not afraid when you walk at my side. Your trusty shepherd's crook makes me feel secure. 5You serve me a six-course dinnerright in front of my enemies. You revive my drooping head;my cup brims with blessing. (MSG)

Psalms 24: 4-5 He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idolor swear by what is false. 5He will receive blessing from the LORD and vindication from God his Savior. (NIV)

Psalms 24: 4-5 Only the clean-handed,only the pure-hearted; Men who won't cheat, women who won't seduce. 5GOD is at their side; with GOD's help they make it. (MSG)

Psalms 25: 4-5 Show me your ways, O LORD,teach me your paths; 5guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long. (NIV)

Psalms 25: 4-5 Show me how you work, GOD; School me in your ways. 5Take me by the hand;Lead me down the path of truth. You are my Savior, aren't you? (MSG)

Have a wonderful day!
